JAWS Trainers / ODAR Only
Hi Technical EWD listserv recipients. I'm forwarding this notice along to any blind or low vision ODAR employee who may have missed it. The DMA viewer now offers built in OCR functionality. According to the notice "This release contains new Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software that translates a page of text from a document image file into actual text characters. The new OCR engine will give all DMA users the "Ability to run OCR and search against a single page, multiple pages, a full document, or across multiple documents opened in the DMA Viewer." Additionally, the new OCR feature makes it possible to OCR text to be selected, copied, and then pasted into external applications such as Microsoft Word. All of which appears to be great news for those of us who have had difficulty using the JAWS built-in OCR functionality or the KESI virtual printer to attempt to perform these tasks. As always, OCR can't do everything. I imagine, for example, a poorly scrawled doctors note will be entirely unrecognizable to the software, but, still, this is a step in the right direction.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking Trainers
Dragon Professional 12 and Legal 12 will be downloaded over the Thanksgiving weekend. They are still testing Medical vs. Professional and might have an answer in a couple of weeks. It is recommended to "turn Off" Data Collection.
